Time To Bring Indoor Solano Plants Inside From Garden & Remove Containers Harboring Mosquitoes

Indoor Solano Plants Need Special Care

Autumn hit Solano County. Winter is around the corner. Solano night temperatures are hitting the 40's. Some indoor Solano plants don't tolerate below 50 degrees. If you're not sure what a plant can take, visit your Solano nursery, or just bring them inside as the nursery may not be 100% certain unless they look it up in their nursery reference book.

Solano Mosquitoes: While you’re at it, remove containers holding water. They’ll breed Solano mosquitoes.

Some tips on bringing in household plants:
• Hose down the plant and its pot the day before. Hose off the bottom as well.
• Try giving the moved plant the same amount of light as before. As this often isn't possible, do as best you can. Plants need light and can't just be put where you want them. Solano winters have less day light hours. A thriving plant looks nicer near the window, than sickly away from the window in your Solano home.

Solano Plants Already Indoors:
• Take them out when it's warm and hose down the leaves to get off the dust.
• Don't leave in bright light if they aren't accustomed to it. Avoid leaf burn.
• Make sure to bring them back in before it gets cold.

Solano temperatures in Dixon and Vacaville get colder, than Benicia, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun and Vallejo as the latter are near the bay.

Election & Mosquito Control. City Council & Mayors: Rio Vista, Suisun, Vacaville

How are mosquitoes controlled? Solano County works with the City Council & Mayors from Rio Vista, Suisun, Vacaville. The mosquito population would be much worse without their help. While it's easy to complain, there would be more to complain about without their active help.

Solano Mosquito Larva In Pond Myth

There's a myth that says most fish will aggressively eat up all fish larva in ponds. Some fish are better than others. Mosquito fish are one of the best for Solano County ponds, and abandoned pools in foreclosed houses. Don't catch Solano West Nile Disease.

Fly & Mosquito Repellents

Killing flies and repelling flies isn’t easy. Fly killing devices include the Fly bottle and fly swatter. Also the sticky glue board fly killer, and fly sticker are other options.

The fly bottle idea seems smart. Keep it indoors and consider taking it outside just while being used, unless it actually attracts more flies.

Natural fly repellent ingredients: It seems the same main scents that repel mosquitoes also repel flies. These ingredients include:
• Geranium Oil: to humans it lacks a strong smell
• Lemon Eucalyptus Oil (eucalyptus citriodora) smells a bit like vics.
• Lemongrass Oil
• Peppermint Oil
• Basil
• Marigolds: hardy garden plants

Repel Mosquitoes - Natural Lotions & Oils

The best oil for repelling mosquitoes appears to be Lemon Eucalyptus oil. Also very high on the list is Geranium Oil, Lemon Grass Oil, and Soybean Oil.

Here’s a valuable the list. Share it with your Solano friends and family:

• Castor Oil
• Cedar Oil
• Cinnamon Oil
• Citronella Oil
• Clove Oil
• Geranium Oil
• Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
• Lemongrass Oil
• Peppermint Oil
• Rosemary Oil
• Soybean Oil
• Castor Oil

Possibly Oils from Verbena, Pennyroyal, Lavender, Pine, Cajeput, Basil, Thyme, Allspice.

Studies show that products containing lemon eucalyptus oil are the most effective. Some in Solano County say geranium and soybean oil have been shown to be at least as effective as the artificial DEET. Others say DEET is best.

Products Attracting or Repelling Mosquitoes

Tips On Products Attracting Or Repelling Mosquitoes
• Citronella candles.
• Fans.
• Bananas & Other Potassium Foods: Mosquitoes are attracted to those who recently ate bananas.
• Beer: Those who recently drank beer per recent study in France. I suppose Solano County's Budweiser is exempt?

Which Smells Attract Mosquitoes?

Smells Attracting Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are attracted by:
• Human body odors,
• Higher body temperatures than the environment. Also body extremities with slightly lower body temperatures.
• While there are natural oils repelling mosquitoes
• Floral or fruity fragrances
• Lactic acid also produced after eating certain foods such as those high in salt or potassium.
• Carbon Dioxide: While you can’t do much about your carbon dioxide attracting mosquitoes, you can repel them via the other methods.

Certain Colors Attracting Solano Mosquitoes

Colors Attracting Solano Mosquitoes:
• Blue: It might be twice as attractive as any other color.
• Dark color clothing.
• Natural olive green and beige colors are the least attractive. Consider wearing popular camouflage clothing with plenty of the good colors. It’s trendy in Solano, and practical.

Natural Repellants or DEET?

• Although lemon eucalyptus oil is not for children under 3 years of age, it appears the safer choice when applied on the skin. Lemon eucalyptus oil appears to be nearly as effective as DEET. While DEET may last 4 hours, herbal ingredients lose their efficacy more quickly. I’ve read online that DEET sometimes has health related issues for some people… Who knows what they’ll say about DEET in the next decade or two?
• My research shows garlic or foods rich in vitamin B1 may not really be effective as some in the Solano believe.

How Dogs Attract Solano Insects

How Dog Attracts Solano Insects:
Consider natural ingredient-based sprays, lotions, shampoos. This is in addition to the drops you place monthly between their shoulder blades for the pests Solano County has including: fleas, ticks (carrying lyme disease), mosquitoes (West Nile disease), etc.

• They pick up ticks and poison oak walking through wild grassy areas of Solano. Solano poison oak on dog fur transfers to humans too.

Additional options:
• Gentle flea shampoos to help rid fleas. Avoid shampoos with insecticides, since the chemicals can be harsh. If your dog has fleas, use a gentle shampoo containing pyrethrin (but is this bad for humans?), pyrethrum or citrus oil. Make sure your dog isn’t allergic to the scents. Realize they may smell 10,000 times better than you – put the bottle by their nose first.
• Bathing: apple cider vinegar to rinse Fidos’ fur. Fleas don't like the smell or taste.
• Lavender, peppermint and geranium essential oils repel mosquitoes. Lavender, lemongrass and geranium repel ticks. And lavender, lemongrass, peppermint and citronella repel fleas. Dab oils between the dog's shoulder blades. Also lemon, cedar, eucalyptus, myrrh, neem and rosewood
• Put a drop of say lemon oil, rosemary oil on Fido’s collar.

Solano County Eradicating Mosquitoes

Solano County has an office that specializes in eradicating mosquitoes. They cover Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville, and Vallejo. They go to places like backed up gutters and deal with the issue.

Solano Neighbors Breeding Mosquitoes?

People often don’t realize they’re breeding mosquitoes in their yard somewhere. Solano house foreclosures with non-maintained pools might receive mosquito fish. But how often are these procedures enforced? If you have many mosquitoes check that your neighbors aren’t having water containers such as plant saucers growing mosquitoes. They breed quickly in small amounts of water just about anywhere. It’s time to stop breeding Solano County’s mosquitoes in Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun, Vacaville, Vallejo, Napa, etc.

More Info Is Urgently Needed

• Why is little on the web written on which soap and body lotion fragrances are stronger mosquito attractants? They write about what repels. But many lotions include oils that attract, along with oils that repel.
• For example the peppermint shampoo conditioner might have sweet fragrances that mosquitoes like. After reading the other articles on this Solano mosquito blog, can anyone find specific lotion ingredients that are stronger mosquito attractants? Make sure it’s supported by a study, and it’s not just some garlic tale (garlic might even attract mosquitoes).
• As some have suggested without evidence that the following might repel mosquitoes, perhaps it’s OK if they happen to be an additional ingredient in body products and body lotions: Verbena, Pennyroyal, Lavender, Pine, Cajeput, Basil, Thyme, Allspice.
• While we know certain foods like bananas that are potassium laden, attract mosquitoes, we know little about what we put on our skin and hair. The tests should be relatively easy to conduct in a Solano lab or elsewhere.
• If you or your friends can find anything on google, please share with us..!
